David Carlson Posted October 1, 2010 Report Share Posted October 1, 2010 Some in-house testing revealed how crucial it is to install the USB / Serial converter drivers BEFORE plugging it into your computer running Windows 7. The problem that can occur involves Windows 7 installing the wrong driver. It may work intermittently, but not effectively. Johnson Posted August 25, 2011 Report Share Posted August 25, 2011 As mentioned in another thread, it highly depends on which chipset the usb to serial adapter is designed with. There are several companies that makes usb serial adapters, the most commonly used chipsets are: FTDI Prolific WCH Silicon Labs Prolific is the cheapest but also the worst, the drivers/chipset are simply incompatible with many devices and operating systems, including 64-bit systems. The best chipset/drivers are the FTDI. These are very solid and compatible with most devices and almost all operating systems both 32 and 64-bit.
