Anchor pull test equipment

The 80 m XHD TallTower installation procedure requires pull-testing anchors to 66.7 kN (15,000 lbf). The attached document provides some options for pull-testing anchors to the required load when heavy machinery is unavailable.

What are the terrain slope restrictions of the 80m tower compared to the current 60m tower?

Terrain slope restrictions for the 80m tower are +/- 3 degrees, compared to +/- 5 degrees on the 60m tower. The terrain slope limit on the 80m tower is geometric, not structural, and has to do with the length of the 80m gin pole and jumper struts. For more information, see the 80m Installation Manual...

Can the winch be used without a vehicle for installations without road access?

No, the winch needs to be stabilized by a vehicle so the cable can be level-wound properly. This prevents cable damage. However, the vehicle alone cannot hold the lifting loads. The base plate of the winch must be secured to the winch anchor to prevent the vehicle from moving.

Is there any way to lift the tower with a smaller winch drum? 750 ft is a lot of cable.

No, use of the five-part line requires 750 feet of cable. The five-part line ensures equal distribution of the tower lift load across the base plate.

Does NRG have any comment comparing sensor stability between the 80m XHD and a typical lattice tower?

The NRG 60- and 80-meter towers employ the same diameter tubes and show equal performance from a flow field standpoint. We have not yet compared the stability of sensors placed on lattice towers vs. tubular towers.

How much icing is the tower rated for? Who is responsible for ensuring that the tower complies with local wind and ice conditions?

Please see page 89 of the 80m Installation Manual to obtain information about wind and ice load requirements. A thorough site assessment conducted by a professional civil engineer can help ensure compliance with local conditions.

Are the lifter cables transferred from the gin pole to the anchor in the same manner as the 60m tower?

The lifter cables are transferred to the anchor after the front guy wires (those on the winch side of the tower) have been attached and the tower has been plumbed.

Can the light be monitored via the data logger?

At this time, no. The lighting system must be monitored separately because the NRG data logger does not support communications to ArgusON National Operations Center.
